A Few Things to Consider

How to Choose the Right Curtain Fabric

The right curtain fabric depends on where you plan to hang your curtains and how you want them to look. Before choosing a colour or pattern, think about the fabric's weight, drape and care requirements. Here are a few things worth considering.

01

Choose by Room and Use

Start by thinking about what you need your curtains for. For a bedroom, you may want thicker fabric with blackout lining to reduce incoming light. In a living room, a lighter material might work better if you prefer soft folds and a relaxed look.

02

Consider Weight and Drape

Do you want your curtains to fall in soft folds or have a fuller, more structured appearance? Lighter fabrics generally create a softer drape, whereas heavier materials hold fuller folds. Your chosen heading and lining will also affect how the finished curtains hang.

03

Check Care and Washability

Some curtain fabrics are machine washable, but others need dry cleaning. If your curtains will be handled frequently or hang in a busy room, choose a material that's easy for you to maintain. Always check the care instructions before ordering.

04

Match Colour and Pattern

Your curtain fabric should work with the colours and patterns already in your room. If you have bold wallpaper or patterned furniture, a plain fabric may create a more balanced look. For simpler interiors, you could choose floral prints, stripes or textured materials to add interest.

Plan Your Measurements

How Much Curtain Fabric Do I Need?

The amount of fabric you need depends on your window size, curtain heading and fabric width. You'll also need extra material for hems, fullness and pattern matching. Here's how to work out the right quantity before ordering.

1

Measure the Pole or Track

First, measure the full usable width of your curtain pole or track rather than just the window glass. If you have a pole, leave out the finials. This measurement helps you calculate how much fabric you'll need for the finished curtain width.

2

Measure the Drop

Next, decide how long you want your curtains to be. They might finish just below the windowsill or reach the floor. Measure from the correct starting point for your chosen heading, as eyelet and pencil pleat curtains have different measuring requirements.

3

Allow for Fullness

Curtains need extra fabric to create folds when closed. As a general guide, you may need around two to two-and-a-half times the width of your pole or track. The exact amount depends on your curtain heading and how full you want the finished curtains to look.

4

Add Hems, Headings and Pattern Repeats

Don't forget to allow extra fabric for the top and bottom hems. If you've chosen a patterned material, check its vertical repeat too. Larger prints may require additional fabric to keep the design aligned across both curtain panels.

5

Use a Fabric Quantity Guide

Once you have your measurements, use a fabric quantity guide to calculate how much material to order. Make sure you account for the fabric width, curtain heading and pattern repeat. It's worth checking your calculations twice, especially because cut-to-order fabrics generally cannot be returned for a change of mind.

Complete Your Curtains

Do You Need Lining? Standard, Blackout and Interlining

Once you've chosen your curtain fabric, the next thing to consider is lining. Our curtain lining options let you adjust the privacy, light control and fullness of your finished curtains. The right choice depends on how you want them to look and perform.

▤

Standard Lining

Standard lining adds coverage and gives the back of your curtains a finished appearance. You can pair it with your chosen face fabric when you want additional privacy without making light reduction your main priority.

◐

Blackout Lining

Blackout lining is worth exploring if you're choosing fabric for bedroom curtains. It helps reduce light passing through the material, although some light may still enter around the edges.

▥

Interlining

Interlining adds another layer between your curtain fabric and lining. If you want extra body and a fuller drape, this option may suit your design. You can also leave suitable fabrics unlined if you prefer a lighter, more relaxed finish.

Ideas for Every Space

Which Curtain Fabric Suits Every Room?

Not every room needs the same type of curtain fabric. Your bedroom may need more privacy and light control, but your living room might benefit from softer materials or decorative patterns. Here's how you can choose a suitable fabric for different spaces.

⌂

Bedroom

For bedroom curtains, consider velvet, heavier cotton blends or other fabrics that create a comfortable, fuller drape. If you want to keep your room darker at night or early in the morning, pair your chosen material with blackout lining. Remember that light can still enter around the curtain edges.

✧

Living Room

Your living room gives you more freedom to experiment with colours and textures. If you already have patterned cushions or wallpaper, plain linen blends or textured fabrics can create a balanced look. For a simpler room, you could choose floral prints or geometric patterns to make your curtains stand out.

◇

Kitchen and Dining Room

Curtains in kitchens and dining rooms may need more frequent cleaning due to cooking odours, grease or food splashes. Cotton fabrics and washable blends are worth considering, provided their care instructions suit your needs. Also, keep curtains away from cooking appliances and other heat sources.

✿

Children's Room

For a child's bedroom, choose curtain fabric that can handle frequent use and has manageable cleaning requirements. You might prefer colourful prints or simple designs that match the room. Consider blackout lining if you want to reduce daylight during naps, and make sure the curtain length and fittings are safe for children.
